Current Qatar car license plates
The current Qatar (or Qatari) license plates in use since 2011 are white with black characters. The registration plate can use the European standard size of approximately 520x110 mm. The configuration consists of the Arabic letters قطر followed by six serial numbers. On the left side, styled as a vertical brown-colored band, the national flag is displayed from top to bottom together with the name QATAR written vertically in white characters. In the case of a private transport vehicle, the background color is black.
New design since December 2025
In December 2025, Qatar officially introduced a new license plate design to be implemented on all newly registered vehicles. This new design is characterized by six numbers followed by one letter. The letter can be Q, T, or R. On December 16, this new system began exclusively for auction-based purchases, ending with the letter Q in phase 1. In phase 2, it will become mandatory for all new vehicles. In the third phase, all previously registered vehicles will be required to be re-registered. On this new standard Qatar license plate, the name of the state, the coat of arms, and قطر (Qatar) are displayed on the left side of the plate design.
Special Qatar car license plate for the 2022 FIFA World Cup
On the occasion of the 2022 FIFA World Cup held in Qatar, the country introduced a special design for certain car license plates that were sold at auction. These vehicle registration plates add the World Cup emblem between قطر and the numeric combination. Only 50 license plates with this design were auctioned, and the highest-priced one reached approximately 470,000 euros.
Other designs used within the standard system
Exceptionally, especially on vehicles from Qatar that travel abroad (and particularly to London), it is very common for license plates and their designs to be modified. The most common altered design is a United Kingdom-style registration plate without the left band and with a purely numeric combination. Generally, the plate holder displays information in Arabic or from a Qatari dealership. In other cases, the license plates use only black characters on a white background, without showing either the flag or the country name in Arabic, meaning only the numbering is displayed.

In 1997, Qatar introduced a new car license plate system, with a size similar to the European standard of 520x110 mm. These vehicle registration plates were composed exclusively of a numeric combination. At the top on the taller plates, or on the right side on the so-called “European-style” plates, the number is shown in Latin characters. In the upper left area, written in Arabic numerals, the vehicle type is displayed, with ٠١ (“01”) corresponding to a private vehicle. Next to it, the inscription قطر is shown.
