Current Faroe Islands car license plates
Since January 1996, the Faroe Islands license plates have been characterized by a blue color used for both the border and the characters on a white background. In addition, a wider blue band on the left side shows the national flag and the international code FO. The format is two letters and three numbers. The letters I, O, U, Q, Æ, Å and Ð are not used. The Faroe Islands license plate size follows the European standard, measuring 520x110 mm. Plates are assigned with completely random combinations, although custom license plates are available for car owners.
Details about personalized plates
Vehicle owners registering a car in the Faroe Islands can fully or partially customize their license plate depending on how much they are willing to pay. It is possible to pay only to choose part of the combination. Selecting all characters results in a higher price. The fee to choose only the two letters is 1000 DKK (134 € in 2026), which also guarantees that the plate identifies that specific vehicle until it is scrapped. The price for choosing all letters and numbers rises to 6000 DKK, around 800 €. With full customization the plate is valid for only 8 years, after which it must be renewed or replaced with a standard one. In this case, transferring the plate to a new vehicle is allowed. The maximum number of characters allowed for personalization is six.
