Since 1990, Andorran car ilcense plates have used a smaller format than those of neighbouring countries. It consists of a letter and four numbers in series. The coat of arms and the international code AND are displayed on the left part of the license plates from Andorra, and the name of the country is displayed at the bottom.
Since 1990, Andorra's standard car registration plates measure 340 x 120 millimeters, featuring black characters on a reflective white background. These license plates follow the L1111 configuration, ranging from A0000 to Z9999, skipping certain letters and combinations that could cause confusion. On the left side of the plate, the coat of arms of Andorra is shown, and since 2011, the country code "AND" and the name "PRINCIPAT D'ANDORRA" appear below it. Before 2011, this text was not included. Prior to 1990, license plates had a five-digit numeric format (never reaching 58000, as that range is reserved for historical vehicles).
Andorra uses several types of special vehicle license plates today. In February 2011, alongside the change in standard plate typography, new plate types were introduced. Vehicles with special mounting conditions can use a reduced-size front plate. A new vertical format for motorcycle registration plates was also introduced, made of rubber or plastic. Special plates in red over white background and reduced format were also implemented.
Since 2015, Andorra offers personalized license plates. These plates have the same dimensions as standard plates but must include between two and five characters, which may be letters or numbers. They must start with a letter and must not match any regular system combinations. The price of a personalized license plate in Andorra ranges from €300 to €6000, with an annual fee of €50. This system was introduced to generate additional revenue for the government.
Since 2011, motorcycle and moped license plates in Andorra are smaller in size than standard car plates. They feature black characters on a white background. In 2021, a small design change was made to the lower section of these motorcycle registration plates.
Temporary vehicle plates in Andorra follow the same dimensions as standard car plates but include two red rectangles in the top corners. The left shows the letters MT (Matrícula Temporal), and the right shows the expiration date of the plate.
There are two types of plates for old or museum vehicles. Those that have not passed the technical inspection (ITV) display black characters on a red background, with a three-character code ranging from A 00 to Z 99. Vehicles that *have* passed the ITV use the pre-1990 format with numbers from 58001 to 99999.
Diplomatic plates in Andorra, including those for the Diplomatic Corps (CD), Consular Corps (CC), Administrative Technicians (A), and International Organizations (CMD), use white characters on a blue background and mirror the general plate design. The first two or three letters denote the diplomatic code, followed by one or two numbers and a final letter representing the country: E for Spain, F for France, and P for Portugal.
The current system for car license plates in Andorra has been in use since 1990. Before that, plates consisted of up to five digits only. The first license plates in Andorra were issued in June 1923, using the format RA followed by a sequence of numbers.
