Palestine license plate (PS) in 2026 ✅

Palestinian car license plates use the standard European size, in green on white or black on white characters. The design and configuration of Palestinian license plates varies depending on whether it identifies a West Bank license plate or a Gaza Strip license plate. In both cases, Palestinian license plates begin with a letter, a hyphen, four numbers, and a combination of two numbers or one letter. The letter P usually identifies Palestine, although the combination PS has also been seen used.

Current Car License Plates of the Palestinian Territories

Until 2018, the Palestinian territories, namely the Gaza Strip and the West Bank, used the same type of car license plate. Below, we show the differences between the car license plate systems in the West Bank and the Gaza Strip. In both cases, the Palestinian government requires all cars registered in these territories to use license plates.

Current West Bank Car License Plates

Current West Bank car license plates have used the standard European size of 520×110 mm since July 2018. West Bank motorcycle license plates since 2018 also use the standard configuration, but with different dimensions: 200×100 mm on one line or 165×165 mm on two lines. The configuration of current Palestinian West Bank car and motorcycle license plates, starting from the left, consists of one serial number, a hyphen and four serial numbers with a leading zero in the central block. This is followed by another hyphen and a letter identifying the region. On the right side of the Palestinian West Bank license plate, the letter P is displayed at the bottom and ف at the top, identifying فلسطين (Falasteen) or السلطة الفلسطينية (Palestinian National Authority). The standard system uses green characters and borders on a white background. [Example: 1·0001-A] From 2012 to 2018, the West Bank continued using the former joint Palestinian license plate system

Regional Codes on Current Palestinian License Plates Since 2018

In July 2018, the West Bank introduced a series of new regional codes consisting of a letter at the end of the license plates. These regional codes were originally issued for all of Palestine but theoretically apply only to the West Bank. Although codes were also issued for the Gaza Strip, they are not currently in use. Palestine is divided into several governorates. Each code identifies a governorate or a city within a governorate. Below you can find a map and a table with all the codes used on Palestinian license plates in the West Bank and Gaza.

Different Sizes Used on West Bank License Plates

The West Bank uses different license plate sizes for cars. In all cases, the standard registration system is maintained, but the dimensions vary mainly depending on the space available on the vehicle for the license plate. The usual standard size for West Bank license plates is 520×110 mm, the European standard. When reduced-size license plates are used, the dimensions are 300×150 mm. Motorcycles generally use the 200×100 mm size. The letter P is usually displayed on the right side of these license plates or, in the case of motorcycles, at the top.

Current Gaza Strip Car License Plates

Current Gaza Strip car license plates have used a common system for both ordinary and special license plates since 2012. The alphanumeric configuration of Gaza Strip license plates always begins with the number 3, followed by a dot, a combination of four serial numbers, a hyphen and two serial numbers starting from 00. [Example: 3-0001-00] The final two numbers vary depending on the type of vehicle. On the right side of Gaza license plates, the Palestinian flag is displayed with the letter P underneath since 2021. From 2012 to 2021, only the vertical Palestinian flag was displayed. Ordinary Gaza license plates use black characters on a white background, and since 2021 the typography has been the German FE-Schrift. The size of Gaza Strip license plates is the European standard of 520x110 mm for long plates. The former Palestinian system was practically identical to the current system. Read more.

Special Gaza License Plates for Stolen Vehicles

Although Gaza began using its current license plate system in 2012 and changes to its special license plates have so far been limited, there was a type of Palestinian special license plate that was only used in the Gaza Strip, at least as far as is known. This license plate system was in use from 1994 to 2005 and was valid only for stolen vehicles. The system worked as follows: vehicles stolen in Israel were legally given a Palestinian license plate such as the example below. The design was based on the former Palestinian system. Gaza stolen vehicle license plates consisted of two numbers identifying the vehicle type (27, 28, 29, 30, 31 for private vehicles) (26 for police vehicles) (25 for government vehicles) and three serial numbers. On the right side, the letter م (Restricted المقيدة) was displayed with ف underneath. It is estimated that approximately 17,000 vehicles were stolen.

How Did Gaza Stolen Vehicle License Plates Work?

The process worked as follows. A vehicle was stolen in Israel. Its owners reported the theft and, through special measures provided by Israeli insurance companies, the owner received a new car. Following claims by insurance companies, an agreement was reached with the Palestinian National Authority in 2005, and the cost of registering a stolen vehicle in Gaza was increased. This system ended in 2005.

Former Palestinian License Plate System

The former Palestinian car license plate system was used from May 1994, with green characters on a white background. This system was used until 2018 in the West Bank and in the Gaza Strip until 2012. This means that both areas used the same Palestinian license plate system until 2012. This system used the standard European size with a configuration of R-0000-TT, where R was the number that identified the region (governorate), followed by a serial number, and TT identified the vehicle type. The number 3 in the first position was used throughout the Gaza Strip from 2012 when it adopted the new system. The West Bank continued using this system until adopting the current system in 2018.
