Current Guernsey car license plates

How Guernsey car license plates work in detail

The Guernsey license plates use between 1 and 5 digits in grey characters on a black background, or black on yellow (rear plate) and white (front plate). The numbering does not depend on the colour scheme used. Occasionally, the international code GBG (in use since 1926) may appear inside the oval code. A blue stripe similar to the Euroband may also be shown, with the European Union flag at the top and the international code GBG at the bottom, crossed by two lines matching the background colour of the plate.

History of Guernsey license plates

In November 1903 vehicle registrations began on the island of Guernsey, a few years before neighbouring Jersey. This makes Guernsey the country or territory with the oldest continuously used license plate system in the world. During the German occupation between 1941 and 1945, driving was on the right-hand side. Until 1990, temporary tourist plates began with the letter V followed by a low serial number.

Special license plates in use

There is not a large variety of special license plates in Guernsey. The Lieutenant Governor uses plates G1 and G2, while the Chief Minister has the number 1 plate. Rental vehicles use the letter H in black on a yellow background on a separate rectangular plate. For more than 100 years, bicycles also had registration plates.

Sark and Herm Islands

On both Sark and Herm, driving motor vehicles is forbidden except for tractors, so there are no license plates. Only in Sark do tractors need to be registered every year, showing a sticker somewhere on the vehicle.
