Current License Plates System in Algeria

Algerian car license plates follow a format similar to those of the European Union (490 x 100 mm), but composed exclusively of numbers. The last two digits identify the region (wilaya) where the vehicle was registered. On the left side, a serial number from 000001 to 999999 is shown. On the center-right, there's a group of three numbers.

This group can be: 1 - private vehicle, 2 - truck, 3 - van, 4 - bus, 5 - tractor, 6 - other tractors, 7 - special vehicles, 8 - trailers, 9 - motorcycles. These digits are followed by two more numbers that represent the year of manufacture.

The rear plates have a yellow background with black characters, while the front plates have a white background. Leading zeros are typically displayed, and the first plate in the series is 000001. However, in some cases, license plates may appear without leading zeros, showing only the digits.

Other Types of Vehicle Registration Plates in Algeria

If the three-digit group in the center is replaced by two zeros ("00"), the plate is considered a temporary license plate. In some cases, plates might reference Germany as a status symbol. However, red or blue stripes on the right side of the plate hold no official meaning. Provisional plates follow a similar format to the standard plates, but with the number 66 in the center. Diplomatic plates feature a green background.

Diplomatic car plates may include "CD" for diplomatic corps, "CMD" for the ambassador, or consist of numbers only, with a green background and no letters.

Previous Vehicle Plate Systems in Algeria

From 1901 to 1951, Algeria was part of French North Africa. From 1951 to 1956, it used the same vehicle plate format as France (FNI) with the format 0000AAXX, where XX were four possible codes: 91, 92, 93, and 94. In 1957, these codes, which were located at the end of the plate, changed to 9A, 9B... 8A and 8B, until 1963. In 1963, after gaining independence, Algeria introduced a new registration system. It kept the French format with white letters on a black background, and the last two characters continued to indicate the region of origin of the vehicle. This system remained in use until 1976.
