The current car license plates of Afghanistan have been in use since 2004, with plates measuring 420 x 175 millimeters (mm), featuring black characters on a white background for private vehicles. The plate is divided into three blocks, with information shown in Persian characters on the top and Latin characters on the bottom. The first block identifies the province code and displays the drawing of the Royal Palace of Kabul. The central section contains a serial number of 3 to 5 digits, except for Kabul, which, having reached 99999, started using a 6th digit before the first number, with a hyphen above and below. Notably, the number 0 is not used. The third and final block displays the type of vehicle. On the right side, there is a hologram from the Afghanistan Traffic Office. See previous system (1979-2004).
