The license plates of the Republic of Abkhazia (unofficially using the code ABH) have been in use since approximately 2006. These plates bear a strong resemblance to the Russian system.
These license plates are only allowed to circulate within Abkhazian territory, which is located inside Georgia, on its western coast. They are also permitted in Russia and South Ossetia. However, their circulation is prohibited in the rest of Georgia and is not allowed in any European or European Union country.
Current Abkhazia License Plates and Their Functioning
The current plates closely resemble the Russian system, using the same characters as in that country: А, Б, В, Е, К, М, Н, О, Р, С, Т, У, and Х. Additionally, since the late 2000s, the territory’s flag is placed on the right side of the plate, which follows the A000AA format. In some regions, the arrangement of letters can indicate different areas or special systems. Trailers use a similar system but start with the letters AX. Since 2010, temporary plates follow the standard format but have a yellow background and start with the letter T. Square plates are allowed, displaying the first letter and the first three numbers on the top, while the remaining two letters and the flag are on the bottom.
